Expert Says Lack of Mentors are 73% of the Cause of New Business Failure

Rancho Cucamonga, CA –July 30, 2007—The SBA states that over 544,000 firms close each year, due to business failure. While more people are starting their own business each year, fewer people report having a direct interaction with a mentor. “A mentor can be the difference between a business thriving and one that tanks.” says Dr. Letitia Wright, author of the new book, The Power of Mentorship for the Woman Entrepreneur. “It’s important to couple your knowledge of running your business with the real life experience and contacts that a mentor can provide.”

Many times women do not get mentors because they confuse a mentor with a role model. They think that admiring someone from a distance is enough to bring them success in their own business. “Role models inspire afar, but will rarely have contact with you.” says Dr. Wright. “Finding a mentor is not difficult; however, you must be ready to be a good mentee. There are responsibilities on both ends.”

There are 5 main steps in getting a great mentor:

  • 1.    Decide on what your goals and objectives are for the business

  • 2.    Research and find people who have accomplished those goals

  • 3.    Decide on what you are looking for in a mentor

  • 4.    Create a list of things you are willing to be and do as a good mentee

5.    Ask- with all this information you are ready to start a mentor-mentee relationship that will cause you both to flourish
